The president was assassinated shortly after the Alcatraz incident, by an unknown mutant assassin. The anti-mutant vice president, Isaac Beckard, was immediately sworn in as the new president. Beckard viewed mutant kind as a deadly race after seeing Jean Grey at work at Alcatraz. He initiated the Mutant Registration Act and did not give any options in the matter. Mutants were to be registered and those who would not register would be captured and forcefully given the cure. To make sure the mutants would obey, the president had his secretary of defense initiate the Sentinel program, giant robotic creatures that patrol the streets for unregistered mutants and capture them. If any mutant attacks these robots, the Sentinels label the mutant as a traitor of the United States Government, and either execute them or imprison the mutant in a specified mutant internment camp. Beckard also quickly had Alcatraz turned into a mutant prison with plenty doses of the cure in stock to keep the prisoners docile.
With the death of Xavier, it seemed like his dream followed. The X-men struggled to keep his dream alive, still in their mansion/school, their students have been greatly diminished. Many took the cure, others returned home. The remaining X-men found themselves short handed with Logan going off to Canada to come to terms with himself after killing Jean Grey, the death of Professor Charles Xavier, and Ororo Munroe stepping down as Headmistress due to stress issues. Emma Frost returned to the mansion and stepped into the role of Headmistress. Shortly afterwards, a student named Phoebe Cohen along with Alex Summers, succeeded in using Phoebe’s powers to bring Scott Summers back from the dead.
Rumors of various mutant groups spawning in New York City are beginning to circulate. The Hellfire Club is rumored to be back with Sebastian Shaw in control of the high-class group, a mutant gang dubbed the Morlocks are also rumored to be living in the sewers of the city as attacks on subway tunnel workers increase, and Nathaniel Essex a.K.a Mr. Sinister has set out to form his group of mutant mercenaries which he is calling the Marauders. Once the cure wore off, Magneto regained his powers, and now plans to rebuild his army with the goal of taking over control of an entire country. His whereabouts remain a mystery to everyone as he silently grows strong again in the use of his powers. Who will you side with in the dawn of this new war? Make your choice as all sides fight for freedom.
